All the people who die in 13 Reasons Why
WARNING: The following contains huge spoilers for all four seasons of 13 Reasons Why and may contain content that some may find distressing.
Jeff Atkins
Prior to the suicide of Hannah Baker in the timeline of 13 Reasons Why is the death of Jeff Atkins (Brandon Larracuente), which become reason nine of why Hannah decided to end her life.
In Season 1, Sheri (Ajiona Alexus) drives Hannah home from a party and crashes into a stop sign, knocking it over. The pair argue about what they should do, with Hannah wanting to tell the police and Sheri wanting to protect her future by not owning up and saving herself from being charged with a DUI.
Hannah tries to find a phone to call the authorities, but before she can Jeff dies at the intersection where the stop sign has been knocked down.
Hannah Baker
Season 1 of 13 Reasons Why explores the suicide of Hannah Baker, who leaves a set of tapes explaining why she took her own life. The 13 reasons include her reputation getting completely destroyed at school, her friends abandoning her and, crucially, her rape at the hands of Bryce Walker (Justin Prentice).
The death of Hannah has been massively controversial for the show. Initially shown in the series, Netflix subsequently cut the scene after fans criticized the show for glorifying suicide, and suicide charities pointed out that the scene went against media guidelines for showing suicide on screen.
Harrison Chatham
The only character in the Netflix show to die of natural causes is Harrison Chatham (Raymond J Barry), the abusive grandfather of Bryce Walker. In Season 3 of the show, he is shown dying of old age.
Bryce Walker
Season 3 of the show was a murder mystery, that asked the question of who killed Bryce after he only got a suspended sentence for his serial rapes.
Eventually, it is revealed that it was Alex Standall (Miles Heizer) had pushed Bryce into a river after Zach Dempsey (Ross Butler) had left him defenseless by breaking his legs.
Monty de la Cruz
Season 4 of 13 Reasons Why, meanwhile, is set up by another death. Monty (Timothy Granaderos) is beaten to death in prison, where he has been sent after raping a classmate. After his death, he is scapegoated for the murder of Bryce, leading a friend trying to clear his name.
Amber Foley
Amber Foley (Jackie Geary) is the mother of Justin Foley (Brandon Flynn), whose neglect and abuse of her son was compounded by a string of abusive boyfriends and her addiction to drugs.
In Season 2, when Justin is due to be released from juvenile detention, characters try and find Amber, but she has disappeared, leading to her son searching for her throughout Seasons 3 and 4. In the final season of the show, however, police confirm that they have found her dead at the docks, with the cause of death most likely to be an overdose.
Justin Foley
In the show’s last shocking death, Amber’s son Justin also loses his life. In a storyline some have criticized for relying on outdated hysteria about HIV/AIDS, Justin collapses at the prom, after which it is revealed that he is HIV-positive as a result of his mother’s former sex work and drug use. At this point, the disease has developed into AIDS, which leads the character to die of pneumonia and fungal meningitis.
