The big mystery of 13 Reasons Why’s third season was figuring out who killed Bryce Walker (Justin Prentice) after the Liberty High School homecoming game. The monstrous jock had made plenty of enemies, so there were plenty of suspects.
Bryce’s killing was pinned on Monty de la Cruz (Timothy Granaderos), even though he had an alibi: He was with Hillcrest student Winston Williams (Deaken Bluman) the night that Bryce died. Revealing this, however, would necessitate Monty’s coming out of the closet, which he wasn’t ready to do.
In the third season, Tyler Down (Devin Druid) recovered from being assaulted. Previously, he had come close to instigating a shooting at the Spring Fling after he was assaulted, but he resisted and kept things peaceful. Most recently, however, his collection of guns were found by a fisherman in the local river. Whether or not the firearms will be traced back to him remains to be seen.
Season 3 saw a heartbreaking episode for Tony Padilla (Christian Navarro), whose family was deported by ICE. Although he was seen video-calling his family during Season 3’s finale, whether or not he will be reunited with his loved ones remains unclear.
Things had been looking up for Justin Foley (Brandon Flynn), however, his abusive stepfather came back into the picture, which led to Justin’s using and selling drugs again. He also told his girlfriend Jessica Davis (Alisha Boe) and his peers that he was a sexual assault survivor. Ultimately, he took it upon himself to seek professional help and went to rehab.
Ani Achola (Grace Saif), the new girl in town provided the voiceover for the third season. She also got involved with Bryce, despite the fact that he sexually assaulted her friend Jessica.
She also becomes romantically involved with Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette), the prime suspect in Bryce’s killing. Ani helps turn the police attention away from Clay and toward Monty, who she said had heated words with Bryce the night of his death. Though their relationship starts on the wrong foot when Clay spots her kissing Bryce at the school dance, toward the end of the third season, they start dating.
In the season finale, we found who killed Bryce, who had gone to the docks the night of his death to give Jessica a tape in which he confesses to his sexual assault history. Ultimately Zach Dempsey (Ross Butler) beat Bryce unconscious, and Alex Standall (Miles Heizer) pushed him into the water where he subsequently drowned. Jess, who watched the incident, wasn’t directly involved, but still had some responsibility for Bryce’s death.
Zach was best friends with Bryce until he broke his knee in a fight, which ended Zach’s football career. He was also upset to find out that Bryce assaulted girls. Ultimately, Zach beat him up the night after the high school’s homecoming game. Alex, meanwhile, is the town sheriff’s son. Though he considered helping Bryce, Alex thought about everyone the jock had hurt and appeared to impulsively finish Zach’s job.
Clay, Jessica, Alex, Ani and Tyler vow to keep the truth behind Bryce’s death a secret. Winston subsequently shows up and says he will reveal that Monty has an alibi and wasn’t at fault. What appears to be a threat hangs over their heads at the end of the third season.
Meanwhile Monty, who had been arrested for sexually assaulting Tyler, was killed off-screen, though we don’t know exactly how he died; many believe he was killed by another prisoner.
13 Reasons Why’s fourth season is now available to stream on Netflix.
