The highlight feature of the trailer is, of course, the new map. With its varied icy, molten and grassland biomes, it appears as though this play space will have a much more diverse presentation than the one-note desert aesthetic of Kings Canyon. In fact, with so much polarizing imagery in a single place, one might say Apex’s developers at Respawn Entertainment are taking cues from the Epic Games team and Fortnite. Each point of interest looks markedly different from the last, which makes landing spot selection far more interesting than before.

Something new for this particular gameplay trailer, though, is the reveal of a huge train that snakes around the entirety of World’s Ege. Players can use it to quickly zip from one side of the map to the other, but they’ll have to be cognizant of threats from others that might emerge along the way. In short, the train creates a risk-reward scenario for squads. While it may be helpful to quickly relocate for better circle rotations in a given match, using the vehicle makes you an obvious target.

Speaking of targets, the clip also features a first glimpse of Season 3’s premier new weapon, the Charge Rifle. Just like its Titanfall counterpart, this heavy gun is super strong. The central drawback for that extra muster is the long load time required to make use of it. While it can certainly make sense as part of a well-balanced loadout, it’s likely best complemented by teammates with SMGs or other high-fire-rate alternatives.

Equally visible, Crypto’s EMP Drone ability looks just as players might expect. The pilot is able to see everything the vehicle sees through a slightly obstructed UI. Its concept is simple, but we imagine its use cases in the scope of Apex gameplay will evolve greatly over the next few weeks.

Apex Legends Season 3 begins October 1 and will perhaps be best experienced by those who purchase the upcoming Battle Pass. While most of its exclusive character skins remain unknown, the trailer features a couple new looks for Lifeline and Pathfinder. Both styles, it’s presumed, can be unlocked via skillful gameplay.

Apex Legends is available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
