The beloved children’s television show, which was created by Sheryl Leach and co-developed by Kathy Parke and Dennis DeShazer, premiered in April 1992 and ran until November 2010.

The PBS program focused on Barney—a friendly, purple Tyrannosaurus rex, who taught viewers life lessons such as sharing and forgiveness.

Now, a darker side of the series is being exposed. The trailer for the two-part documentary, which was released on Wednesday, uncovers why the character was so loved, yet so hated.

“I Love You, You Hate Me is a limited series chronicling the rise and fall of Barney the Dinosaur’s furious backlash—and what it says about the human need to hate,” a synopsis from the trailer reads.

“From Barney-bashing to frat parties to homicidal video games, something in American society broke into a million pieces, and it’s never been put together again… or is this just who we were all along?”

The series features commentary from several talking heads including Al Roker and Bill Nye, as well as actors David Joyner and Bob West—who both wore the purple suit during the show’s time on air.

“As [Leach’s] beloved character was heading into the stratosphere, people couldn’t accept that this was just a show,” Roker, 68, said. “And so, let the bashing begin.”

“Some of the rumors that I heard, Barney hides drugs in his tail,” one man said in the teaser.

West, 66, revealed he and his family even received death threats. “They were violent and explicit, death and dismemberment of my family. They were gonna come and find me, and they were going to kill me,” he said.

“I don’t think you could ever think somebody would go and shoot someone,” a woman added, while another interview subject said: “There was something larger going on here.”

People were quick to comment their thoughts underneath the trailer, with many eager to watch.

“I never knew that I needed a behind the scenes documentary on Barney until this moment!” one person wrote.

Another agreed: “Hoping to watch this when it comes out! It’s definitely an interesting thing to talk about for a documentary.”

“This is going to be amazing,” a third chimed in. “I really hope this documentary makes the world finally understand Barney.”

In a statement to People, director Tommy Avallone revealed his personal connection to the long-running program.

“Barney came out on television when I was just 10 years old, and I admittedly didn’t understand him,” he told the outlet. “As a teenager, for one of my birthdays I asked my aunt to make me a Barney costume, so my friends and I could beat him up on camera.”

“Several years later, creating this docuseries, it feels good to be on the other side and no longer a Barney hater,” Avallone added. “Now having children of my own, I understand all the love that went into making the purple dinosaur.”

I Love You, You Hate Me premieres on Peacock on October 12.
