In the episode, titled “Rebirth,” Ocean (Nathan John Owens) died at the hands of one of Safiyah’s (Shivaani Ghai) goons, assassin Tatiana (Leah Gibson).
Ocean had previously been introduced in Batwoman Season 2, Episode 4, as a former lover of Alice’s who had his memories wiped. However, when the pair are reunited, his memories start to come back, allowing Ocean and Alice to rekindle things. Unlike the majority of Batwoman characters, he was not based on a character from the comic books.
The CW show has previously faked out fans with Ocean’s death. In a previous episode, Safiyah convinced Alice to stab Ocean. However, that was revealed to be one big mind game—Safiyah had done it to prove to Ocean that Alice would betray him, but had put desert rose extract on the blade to stop it from killing him.
This time, however, Ocean seems actually dead (though, of course, Batwoman has previously brought characters back after seeming to kill them off.)
Not every viewer was happy with this twist, with some taking to Twitter to say they want some happiness for Alice after a rough season.
One wrote, “Alice didn’t deserve this. Ocean either,” while another tweeted, “LET ALICE BE HAPPY FOR ONCE CHALLENGE GODDAMN #batwoman.”
Others were more accepting of this latest plot twist.
One wrote, “I feel bad for Alice, but also, there are other Oceans in the ocean.”
Another spoke for many fans by saying they were excited to see what the death of her love meant for Alice. They tweeted, “preparing myself to watch Alice go into a murderous rage to avenge Ocean’s death.”
Some fans already had a suspicion Ocean was not long for this world. In a behind the scenes video posted by Skarsten on her Instagram, Owens was shown wearing a prosthetic that made it seem like he was bleeding profusely from the neck.
The synopsis for the next episode seems to hint that Alice will be out for revenge in the next episode—and now, there is no Tatiana between her and Safiyah after Alice killed her.
The synopsis for the next episode reads: “Batwoman (Javicia Leslie) struggles as Black Mask (guest star Peter Outerbridge) continues to raise the stakes with Circe (guest star Wallis Day) as his henchwoman. Alice (Rachel Skarsten) and Safiyah (guest star Shivaani Ghai) cross paths once again.”
Batwoman airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT on The CW.
