Newsweek can exclusively reveal a first look at the show with official images and a teaser trailer showing Tom Blyth in the title role.

The first-look clip sees Blyth’s Billy as he visits a local saloon and stakes out a new catch with the help of the bartender.

As he makes a dramatic entrance into the tavern a scene from his past is narrated in the background, in which a character speaks to a younger Billy and warns him that a gun is “not a toy.”

In a nod to his future as an outlaw, the character tells him: “You never point that at a man unless you intend to use it.”

And it is then that Billy steps into the saloon and makes his way to the bar, speaking briefly to the bartender who motions toward a person he can target.

Who Was Billy the Kid?

Billy the Kid was a notorious outlaw in the Wild West who killed eight men before being shot himself at the age of 21.

He was known by the pseudonym William H. Bonney, but was born Henry McCarty in 1859. He became a wanted man after committing several crimes, including theft and murder.

Epix’s eight-episode season, which is written by Vikings writer and creator Michael Hirst, will follow Billy from his childhood to his early days as a cowboy, before then focusing on his time as a gunslinger in the American frontier.

It will also examine the role that Billy played during the Lincoln County War in New Mexico, where the real-life outlaw is believed to have killed three men.

Who Stars in the Show?

Blyth takes on the title role of Billy the Kid. He previously starred in Benediction and is also set to appear in Julian Fellowes’ new drama The Gilded Age.

He is joined by Daniel Webber, who will portray Jesse Evans, another infamous outlaw who was the leader of the Seven Rivers Gang.

The show will follow Billy as he joins up with Jesse and tries to emulate him with his life of crime, from robbing stores to cattle rustling.

Webber previously appeared in the first season of Marvel’s The Punisher, and he also starred in The Dirt as Mötley Crüe member Vince Neil.

Eileen O’Higgins will portray Billy’s mother in the series, and other cast members include Dakota Daulby, Siobhan Williams, Chad Rook, Zak Santiago and Nuria Vega.
