The list of changes in these patch notes is obviously quite long, but the basic tenor of the adjustments revolves around nerfing items that were way too powerful across all modes. With regard to Scorestreaks especially, Napalm, Artillery and Cruise Missile were becoming so pervasive in the meta that at times the game wasn’t as fun as it could be. With regard to your more standard weapons, we’re supposing that Submachine Gun Alpha and Tactical Rifle Charlie refer to the MP5 and AUG respectively. While there’s some debate over just how overpowered the MP5 might actually be, it may be smart to take the early unlock down a notch until players discover other guns that are a bit more competitive against it. From our perspective, though, the AUG was definitely a gun that deserved a second pass. No shooter fan likes to read a blanket list of nerfs, but these ones make a lot of sense considering how Black Ops Cold War is being played in the days after launch.

Given that this game is just a few days removed from its debut, however, there’s still a lot that needs to be fixed in a post-1.06 world. As we approach the start date of Black Ops Cold War Season 1 on December 10, Treyarch really needs to take a look at weapon XP before sending out a Battle Pass. Right now it takes way too long to upgrade weapons, which almost forces you to find one gun and stick to it just to stay competitive. We imagine more sweeping changes of this nature are on the way in the weeks ahead, but it remains a frustration today. In that sense, the November 20 update for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War addresses many pain points but doesn’t resolve everything.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
