Up until now, Warzone has mostly stayed true to its Modern Warfare origins, with many series fans assuming a bigger Cold War-themed overhaul would have arrived alongside Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War in mid-November. VGC’s sources claim this was originally supposed to be the case, but “several factors” contributed to what will be a fairly significant delay.

The report says that the nuclear warheads hidden inside the Verdansk bunkers will ultimately obliterate the map as we know it and transition into something more befitting of a 1980s aesthetic. The source equates the shift as an event similar to the iconic black hole fiasco that ushered in Fortnite Chapter 2 in 2019.

Specifics about the alleged map remain mostly up to speculation. If the basic design philosophy of Verdansk is any indication, one might assume the large-scale Fireteam maps found in Black Ops Cold War could be used as a starting point for an entirely new arena in the same way the first iteration of the Warzone map borrows heavily from Modern Warfare’s Ground War.

And, taking a cue from the map before it, this upcoming one will allegedly feature points of interest related to its parent subfranchise. The source report mentions locales based on Zoo and Summit Black Ops maps as possible inclusions.

Very little has been offered in an official capacity to support these rumors, but it’s worth noting that official Season 2 artwork does allude to this latest Battle Pass being “the beginning of the end.” It’s a suspicious statement to make and sounds as if it might hinting at the Verdansk nuclear scenario. If an in-game timer is any indication, players should learn more about the future of Verdansk sometime around April 22 when the new Battle Pass is expected to wrap up.

These Call of Duty: Warzone rumors arrive hot on the heels of the start of Black Ops Cold War and Warzone Season 2. Even though Verdansk remains mostly unchanged after the latest patch, there are new points of interest to explore such as Shipwreck and Missile Silos. It seems somewhat strange to add these new places right before much of the map might be eviscerated, but it’s possible these two most recent additions will play a role in the story to come. Enjoy the version of Verdansk that exists today, because, if these rumors are true, it won’t last for too much longer.

Call of Duty: Warzone is available now on PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
