Created by members of the original Westwood Studios team, The Command & Conquer Remastered Collection updates the classic experience without changing its core identity. The digital base version costs $19.99, while the special edition, created by Limited Run Games, goes for $59.99. It contains items like a Tiberium Crystal USB drive, a poster, pins and a shirt.
Command and Conquer released in 1995, essentially creating the real-time strategy genre that’s persisted to this day. The remaster lets users take control of tanks and a full arsenal of weaponry in 4K, with units completely rebuilt from the ground up. Over 100 original campaign missions are available in this new collection, alongside live-action video cinematics that have become a staple of the franchise.
Having older titles remastered to suit modern hardware has become quite an industry trend. World of Warcraft: Classic brought the original MMO back to modern players, while Warcraft III: Reforged attempted to spark nostalgia in Azeroth.
Listening to community feedback, Command & Conquer’s sidebar UI has been completely overhauled to make it easier to use. This pales in comparison to Warcraft III: Reforged, which kept all of its original clunky bars and menus that kept new players from feeling comfortable with the experience. Also unlike its Blizzard counterpart, multiplayer matches with an ELO ranking system will be available for players at launch. Asking for community feedback, remastering old content (without removing it) and adding in matchmaking makes The Command & Conquer Remastered Collection a seemingly solid product.
Fans of the classic franchise have a lot to look forward to with this re-release celebrating the 25th anniversary of Command and Conquer. In recent years, the RTS hasn’t received much love from Electronic Arts. In 2018, the mobile Command & Conquer Rivals was released to apathetic acknowledgement. A remastered collection seems like a solid idea, as long as it’s getting handled correctly.
