Packwood, whose campaign contributions have dropped precipitously, has begun an all-out effort to rehabilitate his reputation. He fired his first legal team, which recommended that he not speak out in his own behalf ln TV appearances and interviews with print reporters, he’s apologizing for his conduct and pointing out that most of the allegations date back many years when social relationships between men and women were different. Corporate contributors worry they’ll be picketed by women’s groups if they donate to Packwood’s legal defense. One colleague who has kicked in is Sen. Bob Dole. Packwood recently received $10,000 from Dole’s PAC.
