The new show coming to CBS will be the fifth different series with the CSI title, and the first to air in five years. CSI: Vegas is set in the same world as the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and will feature some familiar characters.
CSI: Vegas starts on CBS at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT on Wednesday October 6. Before it begins, let’s take a look at where it fits into the CSI universe.
Is ‘CSI: Vegas’ a Reboot or a Sequel?
CSI: Vegas is set in the same surroundings as the original series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. There are many actors due to return to the franchise but there are several others introduced for the first time.
On the upcoming season, CBS says a new threat has enshrouded the neon streets of Sin City, and it’s going to take some familiar faces to stare it down.
The franchise is now over 20 years old and it’s expected that the returning characters are going to have to adapt to the new technology and threats that exist in today’s world. CBS said: “Old friends meet new enemies—and the latest forensic techniques—in CSI: Vegas.”
With the return of characters who already exist in the universe, it’s safe to assume that all of the events of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY and CSI: Cyber all happened, making CSI: Vegas a sequel and a spinoff from the other series.
Who Returns for ‘CSI: Vegas’?

The large executive producing team includes many names attached to the original CSI series including Jerry Bruckheimer. Elementary and Burn Notice executive producer Jason Tracey joins the franchise for the first time as the showrunner of CSI: Vegas.
How Many Seasons of ‘CSI: Vegas’ Will There Be?
When CSI: Vegas was first announced by Deadline, it was classed as an “event series sequel” to the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation show. This implied that the new iteration of the show would just have one season, linked to the 20th anniversary of the original series.
They later reported that although it is an event series, it could be picked up and continue with multiple seasons.
