When was Dollface released?
While Hulu tends to release some series weekly, it released all 10 episodes of Dollface Season 1 at once on November 15. These 10 episodes are between 20 and 30 minutes each, giving Dennings fans plenty of time to stream the entire show over the weekend.
Who is in the cast of Dollface?
Kat Dennings, who also stars in Thor movies as Darcy Lewis (whom she will also play in Disney+’s upcoming Scarlet Witch/Vision series WandaVision), told Marie Claire that she found her character Jules very relatable. She said: “I have been Jules. I’m 100-percent guilty of [ditching friends for a guy]. I messed up so badly with my friends during one of my biggest relationships, and thank God, my best friend and I have gotten through it, and we can laugh about it now.”
The guy whom she ditches her friends for only for him to break up with her is Jeremy, played by newcomer Connor Hines, while those friends include ex-Disney Channel star Brenda Song as Madison, described in an interview with W as: “So strait-laced…She’s serious, she’s to the point. She’s kind of harsh…the bitch…But like, the bitch who’s been hurt a lot.”
The surreal comedy also features The Mindy Project’s Beth Grant, described by Bustle as the “magical chaperone who helps Jules become the woman she wants to be — boyfriend or not.”
The Hulu series also has a number of high-profile guest actors, including Home Alone’s Macaulay Culkin in a memorable appearance, of whom Dennings said in a Refinery29 interview: “Oh my God. I think people will freak out when they see him.”
What will happen in Dollface?
The official Hulu synopsis reads: “Dollface follows Jules (Kat Dennings), a young woman who—after being dumped by her longtime boyfriend—must deal with her own imagination in order to literally and metaphorically re-enter the world of women, and rekindle the female friendships she left behind.”
The series is created by Jordan Weiss, who told Variety that it started life as a piece of sample writing while he was at college. She said: “I was like, ‘My staff example?’ I was just trying to get a job on New Girl!…And they were like, ‘It’s a TV show,’ and I was like, ‘It’s a staff example,’ and they were like, ‘It’s a TV show.’ So they were right.”
She added: “I was in a relationship in college and struggled to put myself out there with friendships as much as I could have,” Weiss said. “And coming out of that time, coming out of a breakup not dissimilar to the one in the show, and realizing that I needed to put more times into my girlfriends, that’s where the idea really came from.”
Dollface is streaming now on Hulu.
