New details on the upcoming title reveal that players will be able to play as characters other than Goku.
A blog post from Ryokutya2089 revealed that Vegeta, Gohan and Piccolo will be playable in Dragon Ball Z Kakarot. The post says those three characters will have a dual role as both playable and support characters.
Vegeta and Piccolo will be playable when players head to Planet Namek. Gohan will have a unique story when he trains with Piccolo before the arrival of Nappa and Vegeta.
These three characters make sense considering Goku does die (or is incapacitated) at various points of the anime. Following his battle with Raditz, Goku dies and it’s up to Piccolo, Gohan, Krillin, Tien, Chiaotzu and Yamcha to train and prepare for the arrival of Vegeta and Nappa.
Goku suffers major injuries after his battle with Vegeta and can’t make the trip to Namek. However, in typical Goku fashion, the Saiyan arrives on Namek just in time to save Vegeta, Gohan and Krillin from the Ginyu Force. Goku suffers major injuries, again, after fighting Captain Ginyu and is out of the fight until Frieza arrives.
Vegeta and Piccolo are forced to take on Frieza until Goku can be fully healed.
If the story of Dragon Ball Z Kakarot goes further than the Frieza saga, then we may get other playable characters (Trunks, perhaps?) as the Z Fighters take on the Androids and Cell.
Dragon Ball Z Kakarot will have other characters from the Dragon Ball universe act as support for Goku in battle. It’s revealed that Krillin, Yamcha, Tien and Chiaotzu will be used as strictly support. By pressing certain buttons, one of these characters will appear to help. One example of this support attack is Yamcha’s “provocation.” This ability lets enemies target him instead of you in battle.
The latest bit of news from Dragon Ball Z Kakarot came at E3 2019 with a brand new trailer that showed more gameplay and cutscenes that perfectly capture some of the most iconic moments of the manga/anime.
Dragon Ball Z Kakarot is set to release in early 2020 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
