Encanto tells the story of the Madrigal family and their one-of-a-kind home (known as the Encanto) in the country of Colombia. Their home has a special touch that grants every family member a gift and their own room to embrace the gift. However, the only member without a unique gift is Mirabel. When she wanders too far into her mysterious relative’s room, she finds a secret that could be harmful to her family and the place they call home.
On January 31st, Billboard announced its weekly Top 10 worldwide charts, including the Hot 100. “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” — written by Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda — has been climbing the charts for weeks, officially taking the #1 spot this week. For the first time since 1993, a Disney original song reached the top of the chart. “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and “A Whole New World” from Aladdin are the only songs in Disney history to reach the coveted top spot.
Encanto’s co-directors Jared Bush, Byron Howard, and Charise Castro Smith sat down with Empire to speak about the growing popularity of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and its impact on Tiktok.
Bush confessed to watching many videos that feature the hit song on the app.
“I’ve lost days to ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ TikTok,” he confessed, “I love that everyone’s finding their own moment and character and dynamic. It’s the best.”
Howard also chimed in about how perfect the song is for duetting because of the countless voices.
“It demands group participation because it’s layer upon layer of people,” he added.
Tiktok has at approximately 1 billion users each month and the app has a lot of power when it comes to which songs go viral. The social media platform has helped “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” reach the #1 spot over the past few weeks.
With over 400,000 videos that use the clip of the song, content creators get creative by making their own dances, creating the Encanto in video games, pointing out Easter eggs, making characters out of balloons, and dressing up as the characters.
Stefanie Beatriz, the actress who portrays Mirabel, recently shared a post using the sound by duetting herself singing different parts of the song. Her video has 1 million likes on on the platform.
