This newly leaked release date arrives just three weeks after the game was quietly delayed during a Ubisoft earnings call in October. At that time, officials had only confirmed Far Cry 6 would be available sometime in the first half of the company’s 2021 fiscal year, which includes any date between April 2021 and March of 2022. The leaked May 2021 release date fits squarely in that window, making it seem all the more credible.
That being said, there are a few oddities about the appearance of this store page in particular. Most critical of all is that this source only seems to apply to the Xbox One version of the game, despite the title also being developed for release on Xbox Series X|S as well. Relevant to the next-gen consoles, however, are mentions of optimizations for the two new platforms. The page also lists support for online multiplayer as well, which in Far Cry terms could relate to online co-op or some kind of multiplayer map creation suite.
Far Cry 6 was announced in July of this year during the first Ubisoft Connect livestream. Leading up to the announcement, Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito, the actor behind the game’s high-profile villain, teased that he had been working on a new video game project that he expected to be “huge” in scope.
Esposito takes on the role of “El Presidente” Antón Castillo, the dictator of a fictional island called Yara. He reigns with his son Diego, who is still learning the ropes of his father’s fascist regime. Players control a neutral-gendered freedom fighter named Dani Rojas who seeks to return the tropical paradise to its former independent glory.
As for the veracity of this particular leak, we could certainly see it being accurate. In fact, we wouldn’t be all that surprised if Ubisoft planned to officially announce the details later today and Microsoft happened to pull the trigger a little earlier than expected. That being said, given how COVID-19 has negatively impacted the efficiency of game development across the globe, the publisher might also be slightly more cautious in attaching a new date to the project as well. After all, there’s lots of time between now and May to position the Far Cry 6 release date reveal as a major component of an upcoming livestream.
Far Cry 6 is in development for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
