Sofia Carson - April Dibrina
Leading the cast of Feel the Beat is Sofia Carson, making the transition from TV movies to feature films after roles in the Descendants franchise, the Adventures in Babysitting reboot, and Pretty Little Liars spin-off The Perfectionists.
Asked by Hola! what drew her to the project, Carson said: “It’s just a beautiful, heartwarming story that when you watch it, I hope it makes you smile because I think more than ever, that’s a really important thing to do.”
Enrico Colantoni - Frank
Frank is the father of April, who she has to move back in with after her dreams of Broadway superstardom are dashed. The character is played by Enrico Colantoni, best known for playing another dad–Keith Mars, father of Kristen Bell’s Veronica Mars in the series of the same name.
Other roles in his resume include AI, Galaxy Quest, and Westworld.
Wolfgang Novogratz - Nick
In Feel the Beat, April is trying to avoid most of her former friends and neighbors, but in particular, she is trying to avoid Nick, her first love. Portraying the character is Wolfgang Novogratz, who has become one of Netflix’s stable of teen male dreamboats after starring in Sierra Burgess is a Loser and The Half of It.
Marissa Jaret Winokur - MJW
Playing a fictionalized version of herself is Marissa Jaret Winokur, the Tony-winning star of Hairspray and one-time Dancing with the Stars contestant
Donna Lynne Champlin - Barb
Donna Lynne Champlin will be best known to musical fans for her role as Paula in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, but in Feel the Beat she plays April’s former dance teacher who convinces her to take on a new troupe.
Brandon Kyle Goodman - Deco
Also starring in the Netflix show is Modern Love star who plays Deco, a gay black man who arrives in town to help transform the dance troupe.
Speaking to Buzzfeed, the actor said he took the role because he wanted to paly a fully-rounded black queer character. He said: “I didn’t want—because he’s not the main character—I didn’t want him to feel like he just came in, was fabulous [and] glammed people up and then left. Which is so often what happens with especially Black queer characters, where we play the part of the glam squad [in films] and then we peace out.”
