The Tokyo Game Show (TGS) Final Fantasy VII Remake trailer offers new insight into how the series remake handles the evil Shinra Inc. and the perpetual frustration, the Avalanche rebels. The trailer includes our first look at Remake versions of characters like Don Corneo and the Shinra spies called Turks, including Reno and Rude, as well the Turks leader Tseng. Even President Shinra himself makes an appearance, albeit in holographic form. Of course, Cloud, Tifa, Aerith and Barret are also featured.

But the new TGS trailer takes us beyond the narrative by briefly highlighting in-game combat and the return of frog status. Since Final Fantasy II, certain attacks have transformed players into toads, which craters their combat abilities. In Final Fantasy VII, an enemy attack called Frog Song transforms the player into a frog, which can be cured with the Toad spell. Originally, players who became frogs could only attack and use items, though the status effect has likely been modified for Remake’scombat system. The new TGS trailer depicts how frog status looks in Final Fantasy VII Remake when Cloud is transformed.

While frog status is an adorable way for players to lose power (Cloud-frog even has a little Buster on his back), the new trailer for Final Fantasy VII Remake also reveals some of the game’s powerful summon attacks, including brief glimpses of the fire elemental Ifrit and the ice elemental Shiva.

The Tokyo Game show trailer also shows off a handful of minigames, including an update of the squats competition from the PlayStation original. It’s joined by a pull-up contest and a brief shot from a cinematic of Cloud playing barroom darts.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake will be set entirely in the dystopian city of Midgar. Remake, which sprawls over two Blu-ray discs, will be comparable in length to other full Final Fantasy games, significantly expanding on the Midgar narrative, which originally served as the setting for only the first few hours of Final Fantasy VII. In June, FFVII Remake producer Kitase Yoshinori said they’re still considering how much will be covered in the second part of the remake.

The first part, Final Fantasy VII Remake, will be out for PlayStation 4 on March 3, 2020.
