Shortly after the clock struck 2 p.m. EDT on Monday, the event Battle Royale fans everywhere had been waiting for finally began. Ominous music filled the arena as underwater hatches revealed pillars designed to support the Device. Then, players could essentially board the Device itself as it rotated in preparation for a massive dome-spawning beam that surrounded the entire Agency and lifted viewers in the air as the true havoc began. The dome of impact eventually made its way across the entire map, giving way to a flash of white light and what appeared to be a brief cameo from Agent Jonesy.
Back on the map, the sky darkened as the lightning storm continued. But, when the dust seemingly settled, the lobby was lowered into a serene remodeling of the Agency. Shortly thereafter, the Device retracted into the ground and gave way to another flash of light and another scene with Agent Jonesy discussing a time loop. When that moment finished, a huge shark-filled tidal wave could be seen approaching the Season 2 map. That wave has since crashed, covering the arena fans know entirely in water.
In short, what Fortnite fans saw today sets the stage perfectly for the aquatic theme expected to arrive in Season 3. Assuming the water level continues to rise by the time the new Battle Pass launches on June 17, fans anticipate that even more locations and structures may be changed or even completely covered. Given these circumstances, leaks suggest combatants will soon be able to swim underwater to view submerged areas. Talk of the great Fortnite flood has been ongoing for the past year, and now we’ll finally get to see what it means for the future of Battle Royale.
Fortnite is available now on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC and mobile. Fortnite Season 3 begins June 17.
