“It looked boring and girls didn’t go to games,” Gordon told VICE Sports in a recent mini-documentary on his rise to stardom. “High school basketball games, the girls were there. Football games, the girls were there. I was like, ‘Ain’t no girls at the baseball games. Why should I play baseball?’. We didn’t grasp the concept of it.”

At 27, Gordon has developed a passion for the game he loathed as a kid.

Last year he was named an All-Star for the first time in his career en route to leading the majors in stolen bases (64) and triples (12) as a member of the Dodgers. In his first season with the Marlins, Gordon leads the majors with a .356 batting average.

“I love playing the game now. The game is fun,” Gordon said. “I realize the game within the game, so I bring electricity to the field every day.”
