IT IS TIME FOR THOSE OF US WHO HAVE tried the “therapy” to speak out. This attempt at conversion is damaging thousands of gay people by teaching us that we can miraculously be changed. After four years of prayer, time and money, I finally realized that God made me the way I am and that just as someone cannot be ex-straight, one cannot be ex-gay. During my involvement with ex-gay groups, I never met one person who had legitimately changed from gay to straight. Unfortunately, these reparative groups promise much more than they can deliver, which can lead many people to despair, depression and even suicide. As someone who was psychologically abused by the so-called ex-gay ministries, I believe these groups are practicing psychological fraud based on selective readings and interpretations from the Bible.

I WAS SAD TO READ YOUR ARTICLE. HOW can we not realize that certain words and reactions are backward? Republicans don’t want James Hormel to be ambassador to Luxembourg. After all, it’s less useful to know whether the representative of your country is a good diplomat than learning whom he’s sharing his bed with. Frankly, I don’t care if it’s a man, a woman or a Martian. As a gay man with a boyfriend, I don’t look for any explanation about the origins of my homosexuality. Can I change my sexual behavior? I don’t really want to–I’m happy with the life I have chosen.

THRICE MARRIED AND THREE CHILDREN later, I finally accepted being gay. As I enter my 60th year, I am happier than I have ever been in my life.
