Whenever you pick up a new quest in Navegante Entertainment’s game, your journal will be updated with ambiguous hints on where you need to go next.
Yet, for the most part, you will have to figure that out yourself by scouting areas, conversing with NPCs, or just getting lost in the intricate dungeons (ala Dark Souls).
The “Crossing to the Fortress” mission is one such example, as it tasks you with finding a key but won’t give you any explicit pointers on where to begin your search. While the sense of mystery is part of the fun here, if you feel like you have exhausted all possibilities and are just growing frustrated, this is how to progress.
Is “Crossing to the Fortress” Optional?
First, it is important to note that “Crossing to the Fortress” is actually a main quest in Greak: Memories of Azur, so it is impossible to complete the story without doing it.
The game never makes it particularly clear which of your objectives are mandatory and which of them are optional, so there is a good chance that you might confuse “Crossing to the Fortress” for a side mission.
After all, you will likely stumble across the titular castle before you have even been given a reason to access it in the first place.
When we found its locked gate, we initially assumed that it would lead to an extra dungeon that could be skipped entirely, but that is not the case.
With all that said, you do not need to worry about progressing too far in the story and potentially missing out on the fortress. In fact, you will need to reach a certain point in the main quest line before you can even get your hands on the key.
“Crossing to the Fortress” Walkthrough: Gate Key Location
To acquire the gate key, you will need to speak with blacksmith Valgor in the Raven’s Road Camp hub.
Before you pester him though, you must first have completed all the quests associated with Toros.
This carpenter can be found on the western outskirts of the village, where he is building an airship for the upcoming evacuation of the village camp. Although it may resemble optional content, this is an essential part of the main story.
Over a series of fetch quests, Toros will send you out into the world to harvest building materials for his construction project. The first of these is “An Escape Plan”, in which you will scour Velhora Waterfalls for pieces of rope.
Once you have delivered that shipment, you can then begin “A Challenge in the Marshes”, in which Toros will ask you to fill up magic jars with a special liquid found only in the geysers of Vigga swampland.
After that is all taken care of, return to Toros and he will thank you for your assistance and report that work on the airship is coming along nicely. When you ask if he needs anything else, he suggests that you check in with Valgor to see if he has any requests.
It is at this point that you can finally obtain the key to Lycer Fortress.
In order to reinforce the airship’s structure, Valgor requires a sturdy metal known as Laurean. It turns out that the only forge capable of refining this material is located in the bowels of Lycer Fortress. As such, when you agree to help him, Valgor will bestow you with the key you need to get there.
“Crossing to the Fortress” Walkthrough: Where Is Lycer Fortress?
It is all well and good having the key, but if you do not know the location of the fortress itself then it will not be of much use to you.
If you have not yet found the entrance to Lycer (or have forgotten the winding route), then this is the quickest way to get there.
Fast travel to the Zyndra Forrest spawn point, bounce on the blue mushroom to your immediate right and then climb the vines all the way to the top.
From there, jump to the platform on your left and keep going until you reach a group of platforms that are being held up by vines. Ascend these platforms and, eventually, you will come across a sign that is directing you towards Lycer Fortress.
Keep going until you hit the moat, where you will find a portcullis blocking the path forward. Nearby, there is a locked gate (which you now have the key for). Open this up and there will be a crank that you can turn in order to raise the portcullis. With that taken care of, you can now press on to Lycer Fortress.
“Crossing to the Fortress” Walkthrough Steps
To summarize, here is everything you need to know about finding the key to Lycer Fortress.
“Crossing to the Fortress” is a mandatory quest that cannot be skipped. It is part of the village exodus plotline, which begins when you speak to Toros at the camp. Once you have collected enough rope and filled the magic jars for Toros, he will then direct you to blacksmith Valgor. Valgor will ask you to refine some Laurean for him in the forge of Lycer Fortress. When you accept this quest, Valgor will give you the relevant key. To arrive at the fortress itself, fast travel to Zyndra Forrest’s spawn point. Jump on the mushroom to your immediate right and climb the vines as far as you can go. Head left until you find two platforms that are held up by vines and ascend those to a higher level. Follow the signs to Lycer Fortress.
