Lucas joined the cast of the long-running ABC drama when the medical show returned to screens on Thursday, October 6.
The series, which stars Ellen Pompeo as lead character Meredith Grey, has enlisted a whole new batch of new characters for the new installment, and one has a family connection to a very familiar face on the show.
Lucas, played by Niko Terho, is part of the new class of surgical interns at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
The group of newbies was introduced in the Season 19 premiere and toward the end of the episode, it was revealed that Lucas was the one intern chosen to scrub into a surgery.
While standing over the patient he uttered the words: “It’s a beautiful day to save lives,” the line made famous by Patrick Dempsey’s Grey’s Anatomy character, Derek Shepherd.
Derek was killed off the show in 2011 when he was hit by a car while attempting to save people from another, separate car wreckage.
He was one of the surgeons at the hospital where Grey’s Anatomy was set and was also involved in the show’s main romance with Meredith.
After Lucas said Derek’s famous line, Derek’s sister Amelia (played by Caterina Scorsone) told Meredith: “Derek was a god to him.”
She then added: “And, Lucas was Derek’s favorite nephew,” revealing the Shepherd family connection.
After getting over the shock of Lucas being Derek’s nephew, fans rushed to social media to question who his mom is.
One viewer posted on Twitter: “Okay I really want to know which sister is Lucas’s mom #GreysAnatomy.”
“Do we finally get to find out which sister is Lucas Adams mom @GreysABC #greysanatomy,” another questioned.
“Still trying to figure out who Lucas’ mom is. Family trees go over my head lol #greysanatomy,” added another Grey’s Anatomy fan.
Derek has four sisters—Nancy, Kathleen, Liz and Amelia—and, while we already know Amelia isn’t his mother, it could be any of the other three Shepherd ladies.
While fans are still in the dark as to which of Derek’s sisters is Lucas’ mom, some believe that they may have an answer soon.
In the trailer for the third episode of Season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy, titled “Let’s Talk About Sex,” we see the return of actress Kate Walsh, who is reprising her role as Addison Montgomery.
Addison used to be married to Derek and fans believe that she may hold the key to them figuring out the Shepherd family tree.
“Addison better tell us who Lucas’ mom is cause , I need to know if it’s one we hate or not #GreysAnatomy,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
Meanwhile on Reddit, another viewer predicted that Addison’s return points to Lucas’ mom being Derek’s sister Nancy as they already have a relationship.
“Nancy feels more established with both Amelia and Meredith AND Addison for future appearances,” they wrote.
Nancy, played by Matilda actress Embeth Davidtz, last appeared on the show in 2019.
