Throughout the weekend many of them were still trying to make sense of it all. The pilot and one of his first officers fought the man out of the cockpit and into business class, where passengers helped subdue and handcuff him. The other first officer put the craft back on course. A few passengers and crew members reported relatively minor injuries. When the plane landed at last, Kenyan authorities took the man into custody and hospitalized him under heavy sedation, withholding his name for unexplained “security reasons.” Some people speculated that the attack was a suicide attempt, although no one could say why anyone would have wanted to take nearly 400 strangers with him. The shaken passengers included pop singer Bryan Ferry and Goldsmith’s sister, Jemima Khan, wife of former Pakistani cricket idol Imran Khan. They can only hope for a more peaceful new year.
