The video, found here, was posted to TikTok on December 12 by Desyr (@desyr.reviews), who asked: “How often do you wash your bras?” So far, the post has received more than 168,000 views and over 3,000 likes.
When it comes to bra washing, dermatologist Alok Vij, MD told the Cleveland Clinic that women should wash their bras “after every two to three wears, as a general rule.”
Of course, the definition of “a wear” can vary.
“A few hours with a bra on with minimal sweating might not count as a full ‘wear,’” Vij told the clinic. “But a few hours with heavy sweating could count as a double—or triple—wear.”
At the beginning of her video, Desyr let it slip that a friend of hers doesn’t wash her bra as often as recommended.
“My friend once told the group chat that she washes her bra once a year,” she said.
“So now I’m just curious—how often does everyone was their bras? I need to know…what’s the most common bra washing duration because apparently, we are not all the same,” she continued.
Hundreds of commenters rushed to answer Desyr’s question, but answers varied from “every week” to “once a month.”
“Every week lol what do u mean once a year?” asked yordanowae.
“I just wash them all together like once a month but rotate between 6/7 of my favs,” wrote Tele.
“Depends on the weather! Summer every day, autumn/spring every other day, winter every 3 days,” said beanie8943.
Laia Sueiro Sabate revealed: “Every 1-2 months…when it looks or smells dirty.”
A few commenters admitted to being more militant with their bra washing, stating that they wash theirs after each wear.
“After one wear, 2 max,” commented ramazzu.
“Wear it once and wash it,” stated iiirisuu.
According to Vij, washing bras regularly is important because “all the dead skin cells, oils and sweat trapped under your bra make for a cesspool of bacteria and yeast,” he told the Cleveland Clinic.
“Not washing frequently enough can lead to stains and persistent odors on the bra—as well as skin irritation, rashes or local skin infections from yeast or bacteria,” he continued.
That being said, “bra expert” Frederika Zappe told SELF readers not to wash bras too frequently, as doing can cause the fabric and elastic to wear out faster.
“Just assess when it’s time based upon how recently you washed it, how many times you’ve worn it, and the duration of time you’ve worn it. Also take into account the weather (has it been terribly hot?) and what activity you’ve been doing,” she said.
