At the start of I Am Not Okay With This Episode 7, titled “Deepest, Darkest Secret, things are fairly normal—or, at least, Sydney (played by Sophia Lillis) is pretending they are after the events of the last episode, where her diary was stolen and she learned from her mom that her dad may have killed himself due to being unable to deal with the same dark powers she is now dealing with.

After a pancake breakfast with her brother, Dina (Sofia Bryant) asks her to go to homecoming. We then get our first hint that Brad (Richard Ellis) has something planned for the dance, when he tells a friend it will be “f**king mindblowing.”

At the dance, which has a soundtrack of ’80s classics from Aztec Camera, Roxy Music and Roxette, Sydney and Dina also see Stanley (Wyatt Oleff), dressed in a typically snappy suit. Of course, Stan wastes no time in requesting Bloodwitch from the DJ. Syd and Stanley make up and he tells her that he really likes her—though she friendzones him pretty fast.

The DJ, however, sticks with “It Must Have Been Love” and Dina and Syd dance, but Brad crashes the stage to make a speech. Turns out he is the one who stole Syd’s diary, and he tells everyone that Syd is in love with Dina.

Syd confronts Brad, and in her anger she accidentally unleashes a Carrie-meets-Scanners wave at fury on him which causes his head to explode—a gory change from the original comic book, where he dies of an aneurysm.

Terrified and covered in Brad’s blood, Syd flees the dance and heads for the watchtower. There, she meets the mysterious shadowy figure who has been following her throughout the season. “Who are you…should I be afraid,” she asks him, to which he replies, “they should be afraid…let’s begin.”

Who this figure is, however, is not revealed, and we never see his face. One possibility is that he could be her dad, who has returned from death in her time of need, though the fact that she initially does not recognize him might suggest it is someone new to her.

Other theories suggest he could be a new mentor, ready to train her to use her powers for good after her accident with Brad. Alternatively, he could be a supervilliain trying to train her in the dark side, which sets up a Season 2 where Syd is torn between her current good mentor Stan and this new mysterious figure.

According to an interview between I Am Not Okay With This creator Jonathan Entwistle and Decider, the ending was left deliberately ambiguous. He said: “The questions I want people to ask are who has come to town? Is it going to be the mentor ‘Professor X’ or is it going to be the Sith Lord come to take Syd to the Dark Side?”

This interview also contains two big hints for the plot of Season 2: That Syd and Stan are going to see their friendship tested and that the world of the series may expand outside of the small town it has been set in so far.

Speaking of the latter, Entwistle teased: “So I’d like it to immediately off the bat to be a hint that whoa there’s a bigger world out there than just one girl with crazy powers,” while he hunted about the former plotline: “Stan has no powers, so if somebody with cool powers steps in and starts saying things to Sydney then that’s going to then kind of hurt his ego a little bit.”

I Am Not Okay With This Season 2 has not been confirmed yet, but with the show currently sitting at number 2 of the Netflix U.S. series charts, we may get to find out who this shadowy figure is very soon.

I Am Not Okay With This is streaming now on Netflix.
