We appreciated very much this invitation, but at the same time we are waiting for some concrete measures on the ground from the Israeli government and from the [U.N.] Security Council to give tranquillity to our people and to let them feel safe and secure.

In all the occupied territories. It’s mentioned in the DOP [Declaration of Principles], so we are not calling for the moon to make our people feel safe from massacres.

The DOP says “temporary international presence.” Where does it say “not armed”? After this massacre, who will protect [Palestinians]? They will be protected by the settlers? Or by the army which is involved in this massacre? I am insisting some officers in the Israeli Army were involved in this matter.

Yes. The money is coming from Brooklyn! We raised the question. But we can’[ do more than that.

Who will give me the guarantee-give it to my people-that there will be no massacres? And what will give our people tranquillity, security and peace? Slogans? They will not forget. You have seen the fury of our people, of the Arab peoples, the Islamic nation. The armed presence is basic.

He hasn’t the right to say no. He hasn’t the right to make a veto. It is not Israeli land. It is our jurisdiction. Don’t forget, it is Rabin who has delayed implementation. And in the end we face these terrible two massacres. You know, since Hebron, how many Palestinians have been killed? Thirty-three. Thirty-three by the Israeli Army.

I am speaking only of these last eight days. The Israeli Army patrols are accompanied by armed settlers. It says in the [agreement] that the Israeli Army will protect the settlers. They have become a third force, a private army.

No. I am sorry to say, no.

If you think that I am powerless, this is a fatal mistake. It is enough for me to go to the streets and to speak frankly to the Arab people, to the Islamic people, to the Palestinians everywhere, that I have been deceived. It is enough. And see what will happen.

Yes. After [six] months, since the White House ceremony, nothing has been implemented on the ground. We spent [six] months only on the security of the settlers and the settlements. Now it has become clear and obvious that it is the Palestinians who are in need of security.

And what are they calling me? For the first time, the furious masses in Hebron slashed my photos. For the first time! Rabin has one opposition [Likud]; I am facing Palestinian opposition, Arab opposition, Islamic opposition, Christian opposition. Be fair. From the beginning, I am paying the price of the peace.

It is not me who is wasting the time.

And we are animals? We are animals, yes? Palestinian animals. You are not looking at our dead bodies.

It is not me who is delaying the peace. I am not the occupying power.

I need guarantees for my people first, after this massacre.

I hope not.

The Israelis know exactly the mentality of our people in Hebron, so whoever was behind this conspiracy chose their [target] very well.

I am not joking. I want peace. But it is very important for everybody to know that peace is not only a Palestinian need.
