The latest of these was in Episode 3, when Hustlers star Keke Palmer played Kira, the sister of Condola (played by Christina Elmore), who we met after Condola gave birth to her baby with Lawrence (Jay Ellis).

Though she was only on the show for a short time, she was giving plenty or meme-worthy moments that have had fans celebrating on Twitter. Particularly, fans were pointing out her past shadiness towards Condola’s character.

Palmer was first linked to Insecure publicly when she reached out to creator Issa Rae on Twitter. The Emmy-winning star tweeted in September 2020: “Hey @IssaRae there’s been a mix-up. I posted about my excitement for Season 5 of Insecure and now everyone thinks I’m gonna be on it. We can’t let them down, put me in to beat Condola’s ass real quick.”

Showrunner Prentice Penny told Entertainment Tonight that it was this tweet that directly led to her appearing alongside the character as her loving and supportive sister. He said, “it was just funny to make her Condola’s sister because she couldn’t stand Condola.”

Fans of Insecure reacted to Palmer’s appearance by pointing back to that tweet. One for example wrote: “I thought @KekePalmer was supposed to whoop Condola’s ass.” Another added: “It’s the way @KekePalmer wanted to fight Condola last season and ends up playing her sister.”

Palmer herself made reference to the tweet she sent to Rae by reposting it on her Instagram and captioning it: “Careful what you wish for. Lololololol….Genuinely so thankful to @issarae! I always shoot my work shots(cause I loves to werk 😅), what’s the worst that can happen? Present your skill, you never know how it can be of service [sic].”

Fans were also enjoying Kira’s shadiness towards her sister’s baby daddy, Lawrence, seeing it as a reference to a viral meme about Palmer. One viewer tweeted: “Keke Palmer showed up on Insecure to be her most famous meme about Lawrence. Talmbout, sorry to this man.”

This is of course a reference to Palmer’s Vanity Fair lie detector test, in which she was not able to identify a picture of former Vice President Dick Cheney—at which point she said “sorry to this man.”

Speaking to ET, Palmer also pointed out how her appearance isa “full circle” moment for the show. She said, “first season she [Issa] was working with the non-profit and she was like, ‘Oh yeah, the kids would love it if Keke Palmer came.’ And then now in the fifth season, I’m getting the opportunity to work on the show. So, it’s fun.”

Insecure Season 5 airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.
