Countless viewers are describing the interaction as something straight out of Netflix’s hit show, You—which is known for its sinister protagonist, Joe Goldberg, who obsesses over, stalks, and preys on women.
The video, shared by @mb2chainz, features a screenshot of messages she received from someone she appears to go to school with. The video’s caption reads: “Are men okay?”
The messages allegedly sent by the unnamed man are alarming. “You looked great in our classes, btw,” he says at first. “I’m not sure what improvements can be made.”
However, when the TikToker doesn’t respond, he sends a second message the next day: “Thought I would’ve heard from you by now, I hope my compliment wasn’t misunderstood.”
A week later, the TikToker still hadn’t responded—so the man decides to follow up once more. “Mary Beth, I guess you ghosted me,” he writes. “I’m not the kind of guy who gets ghosted. I guess it is just one of my new experiences for 2021.”
“With COVID measures, classes moving online, us being in different departments, it’s likely we’ll never see each other again,” he continues. “I want you to know something. My life is a physical, mental, and spiritual journey. Whether you intended it or not you have played a part in furthering my progress in that journey.”
Later that day, @mb2chainz shared a second video that revealed more of the man’s messages. “I know a lot of pretty women,” he continues. “I’m only attracted to maybe [five] or 10 percent of them. It just takes something more to attract me.”
He adds that her “appearance is not what made [him] become attracted to [her]"—rather, it was one of her tattoos. “When I saw it I felt … something go CLICK.”
The man goes on to describe a hypothetical encounter he may have in the future with someone else. “We’ll have fun. But I’ll remember that it was supposed to be … another beautiful woman,” he says, presumably referencing the TikToker.
Although the TikToker shared the messages this month, the timestamps suggest that they were originally sent in January 2021.
Viewers were left stunned by the man’s monologue, and some even expressed fear for the TikToker’s safety.
“Show this to your dean. This is alarming,” wrote @peachgrubz.
“I know everyone is laughing but hon please take measures to protect yourself and stay safe… this is so scary,” echoed @hargomarvey.
“He talks about you like he’s in an art gallery,” noted @sabrinaiia.
“This is Joe Goldberg type stuff,” added @layariser.
The TikToker revealed that she has since blocked the man who sent her the messages.
