We do know that Aphelios is a unique marksman unlike any we’ve seen before. A dev blog from October briefly teased the champion, showing off how he uses his “zen-like focus” to master the art of combat. “Constantly training, mastering diverse weapons of faith, swapping through them like cycles of the moon with nothing but that one lone voice, pushing, comforting… loving,” Riot Reave3 wrote in the blog.
League of Legends Aphelios Reveal
In the teaser story, we learn that Aphelios and his twin sister Alune are members of the Lunari tribe on Mount Targon. Like Diana, the crescent blade wielding assassin, these stoic mystics live in the shadows of the great mountain and are the sworn enemies of the Solari (Pantheon’s tribe). Aphelios trained in the art of combat while Alune focused on the mystic arts, each exploring their own paths through suffering and practice. Aphelios and Alune eventually were given different tasks and the brother’s faith with the moon gods wavered.
To help Aphelios find his way, he took a dangerous concoction of noctum flowers that caused him immense pain. Shortly after, the Marus Omegnum, an ancient temple sacred to the tribes of Mount Targon opened up and Alune was the only one who could be sent inside. Her journey was difficult and while this ceremony was taking place, the Solari striked. Many members of the Lunari were slaughtered under the weight of the sun.
While Alune was inside the temple, she merged with the energy of her brother to fight back the attackers. What Aphelios learned is that if he “hollowed himself out with pain” he could become a conduit of the moon’s power. Alune could never leave the temple again but she could guide her brother and use his power to help save their people.
So Aphelios is a bit like Varus or Kindred, being two beings tied to one vessel. How this will play out in his kit still remains to be seen, but it’s exciting to know what could be coming next.
